2018 INNO SUMMER INSTITUTE
Art of Encryption*
Course Description
This class is currently full for grades 6-9. Other classes occurring at this time for 6th and 7th include: Road to Power and Mechanics of Music.
Other classes occurring at this time for 8th and 9th graders include: The History of Money and Analytical Entertainment
This course bridges the gap between an unlikely pair: history and computer science. Students will explore the ancient and modern technologies used to encrypt messages. The class will be split into a Lecture section and a Lab section. During Lecture, students will be introduced to the history of cipher and the basic techniques that are behind its framework. Students will also learn about ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Navajo language and their use in cryptography. In the Lab section, students will learn how to use Python, a computer programming language, to model the ciphers they learned in class.
* Please note that Art of Encryption features two sections: Lecture and Lab. Students taking the Lecture section (Block 1) will have the option of keeping the Lab portion in their schedule, or they may take another class offered during that period (Block 2). It is recommended that students take both the Lecture and Lab sections of Art of Encryption for a more comprehensive experience.
